Boston Violinist Maynard Goldman has Died, Aged 88

Goldman was concertmaster of the Boston Ballet for 25 years

 

Violinist Maynard Goldman, who held the concertmaster position at the Boston Ballet, the Boston Opera Company, the Boston Lyric Opera, and the Portland Symphony Orchestra, has passed away at the age of 88.

Born in 1935, Goldman first began to learn the violin in the third grade. He studied at Boston University before serving in the Army, where he was part of the music department at West Point Academy.

Goldman built his entire career in Boston, beginning with work in summer musicals and at debutante dances, before scoring jobs in the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, and the Boston Esplanade Orchestra. The major role of his life was the concertmaster position at the Boston Ballet, which he held for a quarter of a century.

He was also a committed pedagogue and was the Director of Applied Music at Concord Academy, where he taught for 34 years. He also contributed to the resident string quartet at Brandeis University and mentored many of Boston's young violinists.

As a freelancer, he performed in Japan, Korea, and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. He also played freelance gigs with a ride range of musicians, including Pavarotti and Aerosmith.
